New building
One doesn’t get to witness a new building under construction on a university campus just every day!
We opened our new building yesterday. What a gem it is!

My theory class today finished several weeks of learning about species counterpoint. As an in-class project today, I divided the group into three smaller groups, then gave each of those three a cantus in the Aeolian mode on A. One group wrote a first-species counterpoint, another a second-, and another a fourth-species.
The second-species group of three students did their work at the board. They struggled with all the rules they had to remember, but the result was fairly good. It won’t live in the canon of perfect counterpoints, though!

We officially inaugurated the Dennis Owsley jazz recording archive at Webster University last evening. President Stroble provided some brief remarks and then recognized Dennis. The Man himself spoke a bit in his characteristic and generous fashion. And then the music played, and what sweet and fun music it was. My colleagues Paul DeMarinis, Kim Portnoy, Steve Schenkel, and friends were in a world of enjoyment last evening!

NPR carried this story recently about curtain calls and applause. I enjoyed it tremendously.
