New semester student obligations

Good scholars,

I’m including a number of important things that you need to know about events in the next few weeks!!

1.  ENSEMBLE AUDITION information – including dates and times and repertoire – is posted at

Please note that ensemble auditions may commence before school starts; ensemble auditions take place before school begins and in the first two class days.  Please read carefully and plan accordingly!

Ensemble auditions includes: choirs, orchestra, wind ensemble, jazz ensembles all of kinds, opera.  Small chamber ensembles are formed separately.

2.  As we are finalizing the schedule course schedules and room locations, we must sometimes shift class meeting locations. Please check your class schedule carefully, as classrooms may be shifting even on the first two days of class…..  The room assignments in the computer will be the most current, so Connections is your friend!

**3.  All students giving a graduate, senior, junior, or optional RECITAL this year: you have a mandatory meeting with me in the Thompson House recital hall on TUESDAY 8/29 at 34 p.m.  This is truly mandatory!

**4.  Department of Music CONVOCATION is Thursday, 8/31, at 12 noon in Moore Auditorium.  This is a mandatory session for all music majors; it’s the only time this semester that we all gather in one place.  We will greet new students and meet new faculty and celebrate accordingly!  Again, this is a REQUIRED student meeting.  FREE LUNCH ON THE LAWN FOLLOWS!

5.  Study-abroad information meeting is set for Tuesday, 9/5 at 3.30 p.m. Location TBA.  All students even considering studying in Vienna in SP2 2018 should attend this meeting with Dr. Carter and representatives from the Study Abroad office.  Study abroad applications are due no later than September 15!  This meeting is also helpful for any freshman or sophomore considering study abroad at any of our campuses, including Athens, London, Thailand, Ghana, and Leiden.

6.  All NEW voice students (BA, BME, BM, except for vocal jazz majors) will sing briefly for voice faculty on Monday, August 28, between 3 and 4.30 p.m., in the Recital Hall.  This short sing-for-us allows us to assess quickly which voice teacher will be the best fit for you.  Don’t stress over this, but DO bring a short piece to perform, perhaps thinking of a piece you sang at your audition.

I’m anxious to see each of you!  As always, call or email with queries or thoughts……

All the best,

Dr. Jeffrey Carter

P.S. — new students (transfers and first-year) are scheduled for a meet/greet with faculty (and a beginning-of-college group photo!) on Friday, August 25 at 1.30 p.m.  This is part of your Orientation activities.  We expect all new students to attend!
